The Peer Specialist performs a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veterans in articulating their goals for recovery, learning and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self help strategies based on the peer specialist's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. Major duties include but are not limited to; Assist veterans in articulating their recovery goals through the use of individual or group meetings. Assist veterans in learning and practicing new skills. Help veterans monitor their progress. Assist veterans in their treatment. Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the peer specialist's own recovery experience. Support veterans in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. Inspire hope that recovery, wellness, and resiliency are achievable goals for veterans diagnosed with mental illnesses and/or co-occurring disorders. Perform a wide range of tasks to assist veterans in regaining independence within the community and mastery of their own recovery and wellness process. Function within a multidisciplinary treatment team. Participate in the service, training, consultation, and other professional activities of VA health care services. Position orients new veterans to the programs' services, hours, locations, staff, and other pertinent information necessary for the veterans to understand how to effectively utilize program services. Assist veterans in identifying their skills, strengths, supports, and resources to aid them in achieving their recovery goals. Collaborates with veterans and the treatment team to develop and implement a personal wellness and recovery plan. When appropriate, position shares stories of personal recovery experiences in relation to current struggles that Veterans report. Inform veterans about VA and community supports and resources. Perform outreach activities to establish community partnerships Assist Veterans in building social skills in the community. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
