Orlando VA Healthcare is a Level 1B complexity system that covers 118,000+ veterans in East Central Florida. The incumbent is part of the Rehabilitation section of the Anesthesia and Physical Medicine Service composed of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, and Kinesiotherapy. The Recreational Therapist Assistant is assigned to one of the numerous clinics throughout the Orlando VA HealthCare System. **************THESE ARE TEMPORARY COVID-19 POSITIONS NOT TO EXCEED 1 YEAR ************** Major duties: Incumbent will consider the age of the patient as it relates to functional capacity/limitations, their ability to understand and follow directions and to provide objective self-assessment of past medical conditions and treatment, or any other medical milieu appropriate to the overall treatment plan. The incumbent will serve as an active member of the interdisciplinary team. He/she will assist the Recreation Therapists in the design, planning, and implementation of specific therapeutic interventions and routines to maintain or improve the patient's general state of physical and mental health. Incumbent works closely with the Recreational and Creative Arts Therapists to assist with determining the patient's level of functioning and response to intervention including physical, emotional, mental, social limitations, needs, skills, aptitudes, and interests. Incumbent utilizes therapeutic objectives which are complex because of the severe and multiple disabilities of the patients assigned to him/her. He/she works with and receives guidance from the Recreational and Creative Arts Therapist to address difficult cases involving patients who have multiple diagnosis and/or severe medical complications which require unconventional, creative, and flexible approaches to treatment which may require modification or substantial adapting of procedures and modalities to more fully engage the patient in treatment. Incumbent implements the Recreation and Creative Arts therapy treatment plan and integrates interventions with other treatment in order to achieve the goals established for the patient. Observes, assesses, and reports to the treatment team reactions of the patient to treatment. The Recreational Therapist Assistant administers therapeutic recreation interventions that strengthen debilitated muscles resulting from the aging process, prolonged bed rest, amputation, stroke, wound care, and joint replacement. Incumbent utilizes VA Virtual modes of care (Video Conferencing) for both individual and group activities as needed and approved by the Recreational and Creative Arts Therapist. Incumbent drives and supervises patients to off-station community activities, gives instructions on expectations and observes patients for unpredictable behavior patterns. Inputs appropriate data into CPRS and related VISTA software in a timely manner. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday & Wednesday through Sunday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
