The Supervisory Physical Therapist (Outpatient) position is assigned to the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (RRVAMC), a Complexity Level lB facility, in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS). The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Service Chief and work may be assigned in any PM&RS area located within the main hospital, or at any of the Community Based Outpatient Clinics, or any clinic area based upon the needs of the section. The Supervisory PTs are responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of the outpatient physical therapy program in PM&RS. The incumbent provides supervision of key clinical and training programs, including the overall technical oversight of the staff that he/she administratively supervises. Supervisors are responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures to address focused clinical needs and the overall services delivered and provided within the section. The Supervisory Physical Therapist will function in accordance with Federal law, Practice Act(s) associated with state licensure, the Standards of Practice for Physical Therapy and the Physical Therapy Code of Ethics published by the American Physical Therapy Association. The duties of the position include, but may not be limited to the below: Non-Clinical Duties of the Supervisory Therapist: Supervises a diverse staff of Outpatient Service PTs, Physical Therapy Assistants may provide supervision to other staff as needed who function across the continuum of care within the facility and across PM&RS service lines. Designs, conducts and evaluates education and training experiences for PM&RS Service Line staff and team members. Provides oversight of assignments, projects and solutions to challenges in the PM&RS as needed. Analyzes reports and makes recommendations to the leadership team. Develops PM&RS service policies and procedures for the Outpatient Physical Therapy Service line. Performs tasks such as disciplinary actions, annual and semi-annual performance appraisals and competencies for staff. Recruits, retains, and develops staff development for Physical Therapy /PM&RS staff. Provides administrative coverage for other members of the PM&RS leadership team. Completes special assignments, and other duties, as assigned by the Service Chief. Clinical/Treatment Duties: Independently plans, coordinates, and implements comprehensive Physical Therapy evaluations and treatment. Performs measurements of muscle function, nerves, strength, ROM, and functional mobility. Performs gait assessments and provides appropriate assistive devices. Prioritizes services provided to patients based on evaluation. Modifies treatment plan based on changes in medical condition. Communicates verbally and in writing in accordance with PM&RS performance standards. Participates in studies of patient access, clinic utilization, performance monitors. Works to improve these areas as directed. Acts as a clinical instructor for PT and pre-PT and PTA students. Delegates selected components of the treatment plan to physical therapy assistants as is within their scope of practice. Complies with Standard Precautions and Infection Control principles in daily work. Documentation Duties: Performs competent and timely written documentation of initial examinations, progress notes, and discharge summaries following Medical Center and regulatory standards. Demonstrates advanced competency in knowledge of electronic documentation and computer skills. Enters encounter and/or event capture information timely and without error. If errors are made, they are corrected immediately. Education Duties: May act as Clinical Instructor for affiliating schools for Physical Therapy. Helps identify the continuing education needs of Physical Therapy department. Seeks to improve knowledge and skill by review of current literature, participation in service training, and attendance at continuing education programs especially in their area of expertise. Administrative Duties: Use the computer system for storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, transmitting and receiving e-mail, activating printers, requesting leave, and accessing the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). Communicate and coordinate coverage for anticipated leave and communicating unanticipated leave in accordance with PM&RS policies.
