Join our team in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This position offers a faculty appointment with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). 

*** Full time – (6 hours Friday, 12 hours Saturday, 12 hours Sunday and 6 hours Monday). Weekend and phone coverage. These days are traditionally busy for discharges and admissions.***

Our division is comprised of general psychiatrists and nurse practitioners who work closely with the psychiatrists. In addition, our patients benefit from the care of experienced and well trained social workers, psychologists, and care coordinators. These professionals share individual cases to ensure that each patient is given the best care possible. 

Mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, personality disorders, chronic psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders can all be diagnosed and managed in this outpatient psychiatric section. Should a disorder prove to require more intense treatment, such as inpatient care, the individual can be quickly transferred to this higher level of management.

While providers are all well trained in general psychiatric diseases, several psychiatrists further specialize in addiction and can play a critical role in the identification and management of substance use disorders. Medication-assisted treatment is available, as well as individual, family and group therapy for the management of addiction.  Social workers and care coordinators assist in the provision of comprehensive care to our patients.

In our academic community, we have a variety of learners who will assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Psychiatric residents may see patients under the close supervision of an attending psychiatrist. Medical students from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine often accompany a clinician in the care of a patient. The opportunity to have these eager learners participate in patient care further ensures that care is given in a professional and state- of-the-art manner.

Being part of a research community, patients may be given the opportunity to participate in a research study. When this is done, the patient has full knowledge of what the benefits and risks are. However, having a research community as part of the outpatient section emphasizes the importance of being at the cutting edge of psychiatric care.

The Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine is a strong and growing presence in regional healthcare. Our Department is based in Roanoke Virginia and has clinical, educational, and research sites throughout the region. Our Faculty are based in Roanoke at the Carilion Clinic.
